Hi, I’m Shelley! I love books, animals, children, art, yoga and baked goods, but not always at the same time. I hold a BFA in Communication Design from the University of North Texas, an MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from The School of Visual Arts, and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
I love writing and illustrating children’s books! It’s the best job in the world! (Except maybe baby panda snuggler, which is a really hard job to get.) I am a long-time member and volunteer for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, including a stint as regional advisor for the Austin chapter. I am a founder and member of two awesome illustration groups in Austin, the Girllustrators and the Illustrati. I am also a member of the Texas Sweethearts & Scoundrels. As a freelancer, I am a firm believer in groups for critique, support, bonding, marketing and goal setting. There is nothing you can’t do with a great group of creatives!
I also teach illustration and design at Texas State University and writing at St. Edward’s University. And in the summers, I teach children’s art camps at The Art School at Laguna Gloria.
I live in Austin, Texas with my author-illustrator husband, my daughter, and oh, so many pets. My greatest joy is my sweet, creative daughter, Harper, who is named after the author of my favorite book.
